Daily Vegan 15: Gluten-Free Vegans Love Puddings, too – by Kate Fowler

Sweet tooth? As a gluten-free vegan, you don’t have to miss out, you just need to know where to find the best treats and top of the list for me is Lazy Days Foods. Their entire range is suitable, so why not try it all, including Rocky Road Slice, Belgian Chocolate Tiffin and Cranberry & Orange Tiffin (Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose)?

Pudology’s Banoffee Pie, Millionaires’ Pud and Chocolate Pud (Waitrose) are pretty delicious, as is Food Heaven’s Lemon Cheesecake, which can be found at Waitrose. The company’s ice cream range is also suitable – choose from vanilla, chocolate, blueberry, raspberry and raspberry & mango. If ice cream is your thing, Tesco sells two vegan, gluten-free ice cream cones – strawberry and toffee, while Morrisons sells a chocolate cone as well as a strawberry one. These two supermarkets also stock choc ices, while Swedish Glace is sold in lots of supermarkets. Sainsbury’s sell three flavours of Deliciously Freefrom Ice Dessert: Coconut Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry. Almond Dream’s Salted Caramel and Mint Choc Chip (Waitrose, Ocado) are vegan, gluten-free, too. Booja Booja’s range is also suitable and includes Caramel Pecan Praline, Hunky Punky Chocolate and Raspberry Ripple (Waitrose, Ocado, health food shops).

Tesco’s’ Free From Chocolate Desserts and Crème Caramel Desserts are suitable, and so are all Trek and Nakd bars and nibbles. Morrisons stocks We Love Cakes Gluten Free Jam Tarts, while Tesco sells Nature’s Store Free From Choc & Orange Rice Cakes.

When it comes to biscuits, try Nairn’s Oat & Fruit Biscuits and Oat & Syrup Biscuits. You’ll also find: Free From Chunky Chocolate Chip Cookies (Morrisons); Foods of Athenry Chocolate Raspberry Cookies and Coconut Cookies (Holland & Barrett); Free From Flapjack Tray Bake (Morrisons); Free From Rocky Road Slice, Raspberry Crumble Squares, Jammy Wheels, Dark Chocolate, Orange & Cranberry Tiffin, Caramel Rice Squares and Millionaire’s Shortbread (Asda); Free From Flapjack Slices and Granola Slices (Sainsbury’s); Pink Panther Gluten Free Vanilla Cream Wafers (Tesco, Morrisons); and Sainsbury’s Deliciously Freefrom Chocolate Chip Cookies, Ginger Crunch Cookies and Plain Digestives.

For cereal bars, most supermarkets sell various flavours of 9 Bars, while Asda sells Perkier’s range of bars, some of which are vegan including: Cacao & Cashew Quinoa; Cashew, Chia & Pumpkin Seed; Goji & Cranberry; Oaty Cranberry & Cashew Sprouted. Sainsbury’s sells Whitworths’ Full of Super Coconut Raw bar.

Like your snacks a little more chocolate-heavy? Most supermarkets sell their own brand, free-from chocolate bar. Some sell a version with rice crispies, others have orange-flavoured. Tesco and Morrisons sell chocolate buttons, and Tesco also sells white chocolate buttons. Sainsbury’s has Freefrom Mint Crisp chocolates, and you’ll find Coca Libre’s Rice Milk Bar and Orange Rice Milk Bar at Sainsbury’s. Choices Caramels are delicious, as are their White Chocolate Rondelles, and these can be found at Sainsbury’s. Montezuma is a good bet, too. Try Dark Chocolate with Lime or Orange & Geranium (Waitrose, Sainsbury’s).

Booja Booja’s truffles are wonderful and suitable, and can be bought from various supermarkets and outlets, including the Animal Aid online shop. But my favourite chocolates are the Pernigotti Gianguia (soft, creamy chocolates with hazelnut praline) that are available from Animal Aid.

The great news is that the entire Moo Free range is vegan and gluten-free. If you’re after a personal recommendation, try Bunnycomb flavour – for the name, as well as the taste. Moo Free makes seasonal products, too, so look out for Easter Eggs and Advent Calendars when the time comes. Animal Aid stocks these, and lots of other gluten-free vegan chocs, too. (And while we’re talking about Christmas, Asda sells Free From chocolate coins and both Morrisons and Asda have a Free From Christmas Pud. Animal Aid stocks gluten-free, vegan mince pies.)

Choc-lovers who want to drizzle it on their dairy-free ice cream should check out Sweet Freedom’s Choc Shot from Holland & Barrett. The Fabulous Free From Factory makes lovely chocolate-covered raisins (Morrisons, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s), and they also make dairy-free fudge and raspberry ice bites, too (Morrisons).

Finally, if it’s sweets you’re after, check out the range from Goody Good Stuff – vegan, gluten-free jellies, including Cola Breeze Gummies, Summer Peach Gummies and Sour Mix and Match, available in most supermarkets and the Animal Aid online shop.
